A little bit about how it was done ...
This is another image using the inside of a reflective cube
to produce the strange effects seen here. The reason the
generator itself looks to be solid and 3D is because it is
placed in the corner of the cube. The mirrored surface
creates the appearance of the object having 4 sides instead
of just the one side that is actually inside the cube.
The electricity at the core is a volumetric texture, creating
the appearance of movement in the core.
